Google does the same thing but faster,
Google has its data center where it keep a copy of almost(but not all)every page of every websites and google update these cached pages regularly. To find the web-pages Google has programs called spiders or crawlers that read the page content, images and links on the pages.
Whenever you search anything on Google, Google finds the relevant pages to that query and and display on Search result, The order of result is calculated by an secret algorithm.
