The leadership of Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) is threatening to remain on strike until government withdraws sections of the bill that seeks to alter the autonomy of technical universities.
According to the TUTAG, an amendment to the Technical Universities Act, 2016 (Act 922) will grant power to the National Council for Technical Education to perform functions which generally fall within the purview of the Governing Councils, the Academic Boards and the Principal Officers of Universities in Ghana.
Local Chairman of the Ho chapter of the university teachers union (TUTAG), Albert Laurent Sakabutu told Volta regional correspondent Ivy Setordzie moments after the declaration of the strike they will remain on strike until their issue is resolved.
He argued government must, as a matter of urgency, remove Sections 24, 27 and 34 of the amendment bills in order for the technical universities to have the freedom to build and expand on technical education in Ghana.
He said even though the strike will disrupt academic activities temporarily, the effect of the new amendment on technical education will be dire if it is allowed to stand.
“We want to cure this mischief from the beginning before it gives us a greater challenge,” he added.
He said the strike is a national one and all local technical university campuses will comply.
On the impact of the strike on academic activities in the Ho campus, Ivy Setordzie reported the teachers are just in their offices and have refused to teach until government intervenes.
The students are also seen loitering around the campus.
