A National Democratic Congress youth activist has described former president Mahama's acceptance of blame for the party's 2016 election defeat as unsatisfying and without remorse.
According to him, the statements by John Mahama lacked sincerity, and that Mahama had not genuinely accepted the full responsibility for the party's loss.
In a report by 3news.com, the NDC youth member opined that true leadership is about accepting one's faults and giving positive assurance of a clear path ahead.In an interview with Onua FM, Mr Venunye said, "People are hurt in the party after the 2016 elections and what they expect now is someone who will give them hope not weak justification as done by the former President. The party now is in the state of hopelessness and from the polling station executive through the branch executives to the national executives, what they need is a leader who can inspire them with hope as done in 2004 when the party lost power in the 2000, it was hope that kept the spirit of the party together." He further noted that while the New Patriotic Party is offering appointments to the people whose support gave them their victory, which Mr Venunye calls the distinction between the NDC and the NPP, the NDC during their tenure were rather kowtowing to the whims of the then opposition NPP.
He said during the NDC's time in government, they were "conveniently and happily pleasing the opposition NPP by giving fat contracts to members of the NPP, then parading them at the state of the nation address in Parliament to the chagrin of our party members."Mr Venunye's comments follow the comments by former president John Mahama, who stated, "Of course as the general who led us into battle, I take ultimate responsibility for our losing the election and so if it will satisfy those people, blame me for the loss”. John Mahama has further urged members of the NDC to desist from making statements to the media, as this will only serve to escalate the tensions in the party.He has however said that the calls for his flagbearership in 2020 are premature, and that when the time comes, he would support whomever was chosen to lead the party.
